Long-lasting lipstick: the powder trick I use on every bride
"The makeup held, but the lipstick went." It is the sentence I hear most often the day after an event. And it is true. Lips eat, drink, talk and kiss, and no lipstick gets through all of that untouched.
What can be done is something else. Not to keep the lipstick, but to keep the shape. If at one in the morning there is still a lip line you can reapply over in thirty seconds, the makeup still reads as done. If the shape has gone too, there is nothing left to reapply onto.
Why lipstick is the first thing to go
On the skin I work in the thinnest possible layers, built one over another, with a base adapted to the skin type and setting powder applied strategically, with a brush on some areas and pressed in well with a sponge on others. Lips do not tolerate that treatment. They move all the time.
That is why, in the advice I give a client before she leaves, the lips get a point of their own. Blot the excess sebum during the day, do not wait until you have sweated a lot, and take care with the lips.
Taking care with the lips does not mean not eating at your own wedding. It means knowing what goes first and what stays.
The powder trick, step by step
A trick I use often is to set the lip line with powder:
- I line the lips with the pencil
- I set that pencil with a thin layer of powder
- only then do I apply the lipstick
That way the shape of the lip lasts a great deal longer. The important word in that whole step is thin. The powder sets the pencil, it does not cover it.
It is the same logic I use everywhere: it is not the product that creates the staying power, it is the way it is applied. There are products that help, but the way you apply them matters more.
Lip shape, the mistake I see most often
When clients ask me what they get wrong doing their own makeup, I always answer in the same order. First, they pick the wrong foundation shade. Second, they do not know the eyeliner shape that suits their eye. Third, the shape of the lipstick and the lip line are not done correctly. Fourth, face contour, where bronzer is used instead of contour or too much product goes on.
Lining the lips does not mean drawing a different mouth. It means following the shape you already have and holding it there all day.
I want makeup to bring out your beauty, not to change it.
If you want to learn to line your own lips, it is one of the things we work on in the self-makeup course, along with the eyeliner shape that suits your eye and choosing your own foundation shade.
The shade that suits you, not the one in fashion
On mature skin I choose lipsticks in lighter textures. Even though we usually want long wear, on mature skin many clients prefer makeup that is as natural as possible.
The most frequent shade mistake shows up there too: colours that are too strong and too harsh, and some of them can make the teeth look more yellow. It is a detail I check before anything else in makeup for the mother of the bride.
Red lips that still read no makeup makeup
A red lip is not the opposite of natural makeup.
I have done makeup with red lips where the effect still stayed no makeup makeup. I would say that is my kind of makeup.
When the rest of the face is clean, red lips do not shout, they simply give direction. The only situation where I think about them differently is when the dress is red too. Then I do not repeat the same intensity, because the two colours fight each other. I choose a red deeper than the dress, never identical, and keep the rest discreet. I wrote about this at length in what makeup goes with your dress.
A wedding day is 24 hours, not eight
Brides usually have their makeup done at first light, at five or six in the morning, and the makeup has to last practically 24 hours. On the skin that means an anti-perspirant base, thin layers, powder pressed in where it is needed and a setting spray adapted to the skin type. On the lips it means a set lip line and reapplying.
Bridal makeup without a trial is 600 RON, and a bridal makeup trial is 400 RON. Most clients also choose Makeup Refresh, 200 RON, a twenty to thirty minute session at the hotel, at the restaurant or wherever you are, where we refresh the skin and bring the lips back up for the evening.

Frequently asked questions
How do I make lipstick last longer?
I line the lips with a pencil, set that pencil with a thin layer of powder and only then apply the lipstick. That way the shape of the lip lasts a great deal longer, and if the lipstick does wear off during dinner, you have something to reapply over in thirty seconds.
What do I do if my lipstick wears off during the party?
You reapply the lipstick over the lip line that stayed set, without redrawing the shape. If you would rather not deal with it at all, there is Makeup Refresh, 200 RON, twenty to thirty minutes at the hotel, at the restaurant or wherever you are, where we refresh the skin and bring the lips back up for the evening.
What lipstick suits mature skin?
Lighter textures. Even though we usually want long wear, on mature skin many clients prefer makeup that is as natural as possible. I avoid shades that are too strong and too harsh, because some of them can make the teeth look more yellow.
Can I learn to line my own lips?
Yes, it is one of the things we work on in the self-makeup course, 1000 RON, one to one and across two sessions. The course is personalised, nothing about it is standard, so you can learn absolutely anything you want, from lining your lips to the eyeliner shape that suits your eye.
Do you travel outside Bacau for bridal makeup?
Yes, I travel to Onesti, Moinesti, Comanesti, Buhusi, Roman, Piatra Neamt and Adjud, and for longer distances we agree at booking. Bridal makeup without a trial is 600 RON, and a bridal makeup trial is 400 RON.
