How makeup is done for a jewellery campaign

Editorial · by PUCCA diana · 4 min readPublished

For OPAL, a Romanian silver jewellery brand with stores in Bacău, Iași and Suceava, the brand approached me. I think they chose me because I have experience with shoots and with important events, and because I know how to adapt to many kinds of makeup.

I liked their brand and their products very much. I think they have a current image and I found it interesting to work together. We did several shoots together, for their collections.

The idea was to let the jewellery speak

There are many shoots where you, as a makeup artist, are no longer there to make your own work stand out. Your work has to make the product stand out.

I never wanted the makeup to compete with the jewellery. I do not think that is the point.

That is why the makeup has to be clean, very natural, not visible on the skin but still flattering it. I chose colours and textures that push the product forward and make it look as though everything had been thought out together, with the outfits and with the jewellery itself.

Red lips, but a no makeup makeup effect

I loved that the brief was, most of the time, a very natural look. There were also looks where I used a red lip, but the effect stayed no makeup makeup every time. Glowy, natural, healthy skin.

I could say it is my kind of makeup.

When I saw the photographs

I remember the first time I saw the pictures, and every time after that. I was impressed every single time.

I loved how the whole concept came to life, how it felt as though everyone understood exactly what to do, and the final result was wonderful. I think they achieved what they set out to do through the way they worked with us. I liked the jewellery every time, and the models were wonderful, very easy to work with, and right for each collection.

Why I take on projects like this

Before anything else I am an artist. I painted from a young age and I have always loved colour and texture.

These projects help me feed the creative side. As much as I love doing makeup on clients, for weddings, parties, events or proms, I love these just as much. Some put pressure on you through time, some because there is a lot of commotion around, some because you have to build a completely unconventional look. That is why I like them.

I like to experiment and to play when it comes to makeup, and the more you experiment and dare to do things differently, the better your work on clients becomes.

From this side I take techniques that I then use in the salon. When I have a client who never wears makeup and wants something extremely natural, the techniques I learned on shoots are exactly what I use.

Frequently asked questions

Do you do makeup for product or brand campaigns?

Yes. I worked with the jewellery brand OPAL on several shoots for their collections. On a product shoot the makeup must not compete with the product, it has to make it stand out, so it stays clean and very natural, with colours and textures chosen so that everything looks designed together with the outfits.

What does makeup look like on a jewellery shoot?

Clean and very natural, enough not to read on the skin but still to flatter it. The jewellery has to stay the main element. Even when I worked with a red lip, the rest of the face stayed in a no makeup makeup effect, with glowy, healthy skin.

Do you work with brands, photographers and agencies?

Yes. I work on product, lookbook and campaign shoots, on my own or as part of a team with a photographer, stylist and hairstylist. I am used to tight schedules and to projects where the makeup has to serve a concept rather than stand out.

What does no makeup makeup mean?

Makeup that shows just enough to brighten and even out, but not enough to look like makeup. It is built in thin layers, only where needed, with creamy textures that let skin look like skin. It is asked for on shoots and by clients who do not normally wear makeup.
