5 self-makeup mistakes (and how to avoid them)

Woman applying her own makeup, a self-makeup guide by Pucca Diana

Most self-makeup problems don't come from a lack of expensive products, but from a few missed steps. Here are the five mistakes I see most often in my clients and a concrete fix for each.

1. The wrong foundation

The most common mistake is a shade or texture meant for different skin. A foundation that's too light looks like a mask, while one that's too dry emphasizes fine lines. The fix: test the shade along your jawline, in natural light. It should disappear into the skin, not leave a line.

2. Too much product

A heavy hand is the enemy of natural makeup. Too much foundation, too much powder, too much blush settles into fine lines and ages the face. The fix: build in thin layers. It's easier to add more than to take away.

Good makeup feels light on the skin. If you can feel it, it's probably too much.

3. Forced brows

Brows drawn too intensely or too dark completely change your expression and look unnatural. The fix: choose a shade one tone lighter than your hair roots and fill only the gaps, with short, hair-like strokes.

4. Skipping skin prep

Makeup applied to unprepared skin doesn't last and doesn't look smooth. The fix: cleanse, moisturize and let the cream absorb before foundation. Prepped skin keeps makeup fresh for hours longer.

5. No setting

Many clients skip the last step and wonder why their makeup doesn't last by noon. The fix: set with powder in the areas that get shiny and, if needed, with a setting spray. It's the step that keeps everything in place.

The good news

All five can be learned. In my self-makeup course we work step by step, on your own products and for your own face, until you can do it yourself at home, whenever you need to. The course is one-to-one, runs over two sessions of 3 hours each and costs 1000 RON.

Where the mistakes really come from

Almost all of them start in the same place: you followed a tutorial made on someone else's face. Different skin, different bone structure, different light in the room. The steps are correct, but they are not your steps.

That is why at the self-makeup course I do not work on a model, I work on your face and on your products. What you learn there applies the next day at home, not only while you are in the chair.

What I do differently, by skin type

On oily skin I use matte textures in the T-zone and keep the light only on the cheekbones, otherwise after two hours everything that was glow turns to shine.

On dry and mature skin I do the opposite: I hydrate more and avoid excess powder, so the product does not gather in fine lines. On sensitive or acne-prone skin, what I choose matters as much as how I apply it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most common self-makeup mistake?

The wrong foundation in shade or texture. Tested along the jawline in natural light, it should disappear into the skin.

Why does foundation settle into fine lines?

Usually from too much product and unprepared skin. Thin layers and good hydration solve the problem.

How do I learn to do my own makeup properly?

In a self-makeup course you work step by step, on your own products and for your own face, until you can do it yourself at home.

Why doesn't it look like the tutorial?

Because the tutorial was made on a different face, with a different structure and different light. The steps are correct, but they are not your steps. That is why at the course we work on your face and on your products.

Does my makeup break down faster because I have oily skin?

Not necessarily. It breaks down because the product is not right for oily skin. With matte textures in the T-zone and setting in layers, it lasts just as long as on any other skin type.
