Makeup for a photo shoot in Bacău
Makeup for a photo shoot is built differently from evening makeup, because the camera sees something other than the eye. It sees texture, not only colour, and flash brings out exactly the things bathroom light hides.
Every shoot has a different brief, a different number of looks and a different schedule, so the price is set case by case. Write to me with the date, the place and what kind of shoot it is, and I will tell you exactly.
Why shoot makeup is not client makeup
They are two completely different things, because we do not care about the same things.
On a shoot what matters is how the makeup reads in photo and video, not how it looks in real life. That is why I do not use heavily set, powdered skin and I do not use a lipstick built to last for hours. Which is to say, exactly the things that are right for a bride with a whole day ahead of her.
Longevity means something else. On a bride it survives emotion, heat and dancing. On a shoot it has to survive the flash and the lens.
Skin that is too set and too powdered reads matte and thickened in photographs. Products containing light-reflecting filters flash back white. A long-wear lipstick settles into streaks on the lip and shows up in macro.
What I do instead
- Thin layers, only where they are needed, so skin stays skin.
- Creamy textures that catch light naturally instead of reflecting it white.
- Highlights placed where the lens picks them up, not where they look good in the mirror.
- Evening out colour without loading the texture, because the camera forgives colour but never relief.
- Lips built in layers, not with a formula that dries and cracks at the first expression.
What kinds of shoots I cover
- Personal branding, for entrepreneurs, doctors, lawyers or anyone who needs a professional photograph.
- Lookbook and product campaigns, where the makeup serves the product.
- Editorial and graphic makeup, for creative projects, including a wet look on the eyelid or glossy textures, which read beautifully in photographs and almost not at all in the mirror.
- Makeup for models, at shows, for lookbooks or portfolios. I have done makeup for models on the runway at London Fashion Week and on collection shoots.
How I know what works in front of a camera
From the work on the other side. I did makeup on the runway at London Fashion Week, for the Fragile collection by the designers Kolchagov Barba, I did the contestants and the host at Miss England, under strong lights and many cameras, and I worked on jewellery campaigns for the brand OPAL.
All three lead to the same conclusion: makeup can look flawless in the mirror and wrong in a photograph. Products are chosen according to the light you will be in, not according to how they look on the spot.
What helps you come prepared
- Come with a bare face. I cleanse the skin beforehand anyway.
- Do not leave brow shaping for the same day. Skin needs a few hours to settle.
- Bring me a few photographs of what you like, so I know the direction.
- Tell me in advance where the shoot is and in what light, in a studio or outdoors. It changes the build.
- If you have a particular outfit, tell me its colour. The makeup is coordinated with it.
Frequently asked questions
How much does makeup for a photo shoot in Bacău cost?
Every shoot has a different brief, a different number of looks and a different schedule, so the price is set case by case. Write to me with the date, the place and what kind of shoot it is, and I will tell you exactly. If the shoot is somewhere other than the studio, I work at your home, at the hotel or on location, and travel is agreed when booking.
Why does makeup look different in photos than in the mirror?
Because flash and strong light bring out skin texture and any product that reflects light. Skin that is heavily set and powdered reads matte and thickened, and products with light-reflecting filters flash back white. That is why I choose products according to the light you will be in, not according to how they look on the spot.
What is the difference between shoot makeup and event makeup?
At an event the makeup has to survive emotion, heat and dancing, so it is set more firmly. On a shoot what matters is how it photographs, so I do not use heavily set, powdered skin or a lipstick built to last for hours. They are two different builds, for two different purposes.
Do you do makeup for family, maternity or Christmas shoots?
Yes, all three. For a family shoot the makeup has to survive the children too, for a maternity shoot I use gentle products and a luminous look, and for a Christmas shoot I take the warm lights and the bulbs in frame into account.
Do you do makeup for personal branding photos?
Yes. For professional photographs I go for clean makeup that makes you look rested and confident, without looking like makeup. It is used on a website, on LinkedIn and in presentation materials, so it has to look like you, not like a retouched version of you.
Should I come with a bare face?
Yes, ideally. I cleanse the skin beforehand anyway. If you have a cream you use daily, you can apply it in the morning. And do not leave brow shaping for the same day, the skin needs a few hours to settle.
